You can recognise a good workman by his tools. Here at Teqa, we prefer to work with open source systems and software. As Joomla! specialist, we know all the ins and outs of PHP, the script language in which Joomla! is written. Open source means that the source code is available to everyone, to work freely with it, and that designers can use it to write their own modules, components and plug-ins (additions).

The advantages of open source

One of the greatest advantages of open source is that users are no longer dealing with a single software supplier dominating the market. Developers from all over the world bring new ideas in. They are each other's quality controllers; the interchangeability of the software is subject to strict demands. This is implemented by setting up internationally accepted open standards, for example XML, to exchange data.

To sum up the advantages: The user is no longer dependent on the survivability of the software supplier. The user can continue development of purchased software. The user can profit from the successful developments by fellow-users. The exchange of data takes place through open standards such as XML.

A few of the best known software names developed in open source: Linux, the operating system, Mozilla Firefox, de Apache webserver and OpenOffice. And of course Joomla!.

MySQL: suitable for all sorts of databases

If there is a database linked to your Joomla! web site, (for example a web shop, a forum or an image gallery), more often than not it's running in the open source programme MySQL, a much used database management system, suitable for all sizes of application. For example, Wikipedia runs on it, but so do modest weblogs.

Also other programming languages
